The Peak Tram

With seven million annual visitors, the Peak Tram is one of Hong Kong's staple tourist experiences - or traps - depending on your perspective.  You can get to it by taking the MTR to the Central stop, and walking to the tram station at Garden Road.  The tram ride experience begins with a long line at the base to buy tickets.  If you buy a bundle of the tram ride along with entrance to Madame Tussaud's wax museum on the Peak, you get to cut the line.  However, despite the length, the line moves pretty fast and before you know it you are being seated on what looks like a genuine 19th century tram.

The tram itself has been running since 1888.  The Peak offered a cooler climate to the wealthy - primarily expatriates during Hong Kong's early history as a British outpost.  Today, the Tram ferries tourists up to enjoy the spectacular views of Hong Kong and Harbor, as well as to enjoy the shopping at the Peak Tower - a shopping center at the terminus of the Tram at the top of the Peak.  You can find out more about the Peak Tram here.
