The Tsukiji Fish Market is a wholesale fish market in Tokyo, right by the Shiodome. Business begins at 5:30 in the morning. Fish and other seafood are laid out and restaurant buyers converge to pick out their product for the day. By 7:30 am most business has been completed and housewives descend on the market to do their shopping with what's left.
It's a screaming frenzy - you definitely don't want to get in people's way as they're in the heat of the moment conducting business that early in the morning. The smell is pretty strong too - but it is quite a surreal experience being around that much seafood. Definitely an attraction worth covering in Tokyo - especially since you'll be jetlagged anyway.
As a bonus, some of the best sushi in Tokyo can be found in the warren of shops surrounding the fish market. If nothing else, it's definitely the freshest sushi I had in Japan.
