hawaii food: korea house

one of my favorite types of korean food is called “yakiniku” or korean barbeque. my favorite restaurant that serves this dish is “korea house,” which is located along kapiolani blvd., right behind ala moana center and across from papa john’s. while it does have the normal run of the mill korean dishes such as japchae and meatjun, the restaurant specializes in yakiniku, where you cook the own beef on special grills. slightly marinated thinly slice pieces of beef and other cuts of the cow is given to you raw, and you can cook them at your pace. with each order of the beef, you are also given many little dishes of appetizers that accompany your meal—all types of vegetables, dried fish, and seafood. be sure to wear clothing you are able to wash out the smoke smell with as you’ll come out of the restaurant smelling like yakiniku.
