The fact that Penang has great food is no secret in Malaysia. However, while many Malaysians rave about Penang’s hawker food, the fresh seafood in Penang is what makes the island one of Malaysia’s food capitals. As a frequent visitor to Penang since childhood, I’ve tried all kinds of seafood restaurants, and amongst the numerous seafood restaurants the island has to offer Fishing Village has to be my favorite.

While the appearance of the restaurant is a little rundown, it is a perfect example of local belief that great food doesn’t have to come from a fancy restaurant. Besides, once you taste the affordable and mouth-watering seafood nothing else matters. Dishes I would strongly recommend are the black pepper squid, deep-fried Nestum soft-shelled crab and the lobster thermidor. However it might also help to have a chat with the waiters for the day’s freshest catch.

Fishing Village is located at the end of Batu Ferringhi (the main coastal road), next to another popular restaurant called Waterworld. Finding the restaurant might be a bit of a challenge but most cab drivers should know how to find it, and if not the hotel concierge should be able to provide directions. And don’t worry the food is definitely worth it
