A sacred place of worship for Malaysian Hindus, the Batu Caves is actually a limestone hill situated about 15 kilometers from the Kuala Lumpur city centre. The hill is made up of three main caves, each about 100m tall, and a number of smaller caves. Visitors come from far to climb the 272 steps leading to the largest of the caves, which is known as the Temple Cave or Cathedral Cave. The Temple Cave is home to a number of religious Hindu shrines and is the site of the Malaysian Hindu\\\'s annual Thaipusam celebration. A number of the shrines in the Temple Cave are based on the Hindu story of Lord Murugan\\\'s victory over Soorapadam, which is detailed in an audio tour available to visitors. At the base of the Batu Caves are a number of street vendors selling souvenirs, as well as food to feed the large population of monkeys that live around the vicinity of the caves. The Batu Caves are opened to visitors from 7am to 9pm daily.
