King of Pastrami

With so much terrific French food all around you in Paris, it's hard to imagine wanting anything else.  Still, when the occasional ethnic-food craving hits, it's nice to know that Paris can satisfy these yearnings as well.

For me, the yearning takes the form of deli-food -- bagels, challah, pickles, and pastrami.  And the best place to get this kind of delicacy is in Paris's old Jewish quarter, centered around the Rue des Rosiers, in the Marais.  Unfortunately, even in the Marais, I don't know any place that will cook up a proper hot pastrami sandwich for you -- I can, however, tell you where to get the pastrami to make your own.

It came from a deli known, appropriately, as The King of Pastrami, located at number 26, Rue des Rosiers.  The owner is the world’s biggest mensch (seriously, ask me about it sometime), and the pastrami is excellent.

Of course, that only gets you half of the way to your hot pastrami sandwich. For the rest, I recommend hitting the bakery across the street for a pretty decent rye bread.  Then, when you get home, steam the pastrami in about half an inch of water, to get it hot, juicy, and perfectly pliable.  Put it on bread, spread on some mustard (Moutarde a l’Ancienne suits me fine), pour the drippings over the top, and you’re good to go.
