While in Mumbai, you should also take the opportunity to take a boat out to the nearby Elephanta caves located on Elephanta Island.
The caves have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The caves have been hewn from solid rock, into the mountain, and date back to the kings of the 9th-13th centuries. Of the sculptures of the site, the most famous and impressive is the Trimurti sculpture depicting the faces of the Hindu Trinity - Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer on one body. Overall, the caves are dedicated to Maheswara, or Shiva.
